Herculean efforts for Whitbread

Large conferences highlight particular issues, and no more so than when a gathering of City investors have come over to hear the latest news from corporate executive teams.

It’s a daunting prospect to organise an Investor Day, presenting your corporate vision to over 650 City and world investors — even if you’re as major an organisation as Whitbread PLC. So who do you trust to deliver an eye-catching, unified visual theme? Creative Solutions, of course.

 

We were approached by Joan Russell, Whitbread’s Investor Relations Director, to develop a theme linking Whitbread’s major sectors (Costa Coffee, Premier Inn and Whitbread Restaurants) for an event. Their Investor Day was to be held at Nomura Bank in the City of London and major investors would be invited, not only from the City but from all over the world.

 

What they needed was development and design for the complete staging, event presentations, signage, conference packs, exhibition areas and invitations for more than 650 investors, analysts and corporate members. In addition, all the materials were to be broadcast as webcasts, as well as being available after the conference.

 

A unity of colour

 

It was a challenging brief, but one we were up to. Central to the theme we produced was a tramline of colours blending into a road of colour, representing the unity of Whitbread’s various brands.

 

What we produced incorporated over 60m of floor, wall and window graphics, information panels and brand logos. Besides making the whole event available live online, we also had large-scale plasma TVs showing footage recorded at various Whitbread regional headquarters all over the world. Everything was downloadable the moment the conference was over, and each delegate received a USB lanyard at registration containing all the presentations.

Detailed, thorough and professional

 

The exhibition area ranged from Premier Inn displaying current technology and its international bedroom format and Whitbread Restaurants demonstrating new food and restaurant management, to Costa Coffee showcasing their new Express machines by serving iced coffee and fruit drinks.

 

Whitbread's CEO, Alison Brittan, gave a major presentation outlining their new corporate strategy, with the executive teams delivering in-depth analysis of Premier Inn and Costa brands.

 

We provided the materials and visual design to make all this eye-catching, using PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, Quark Xpress, Apple Pages, Keynote and Quicktime 7. We also sourced and produced a number of gifts for the delegates. These included Costa Coffee reward cards, cakes in a Whitbread goody-bag — and six hundred ducks.

 

The event was a huge success. A delighted Alison Brittan commented, “I wanted to take a minute to thank you and congratulate you for a brilliant day yesterday. I know that over the last few weeks you have taken the strain of organising the event along with developing the content for the presentations and put an enormous amount of work into making them detailed, thorough and professional. Whilst the executive team on the day took all the glory by delivering brilliantly, neither they, nor I, could have done so without your herculean efforts and dedication behind the scenes. Please accept my personal thanks and congratulations for a job very well done.”​
